A STORY ABOUT (RE)CONNECTING

We all know that the connection between Lindy Hop and Hip Hop can be likened to that of a grandfather and grandson. Lindy Hop, back from the 1920s, served as a foundational influence for the development of Hip Hop, which originated in the Bronx during the 1970s. Lindy Hop's fusion of African rhythms and jazz improvisation laid the groundwork for Hip Hop's rhythmic innovations and creative expressions.

One individual who deeply understood this connection was Joren, a young Hip Hop enthusiast and dancer who originated from Mechelen and then moved to our lovely Ghent. As he quickly delved deeper into the history of Hip Hop music, Joren realized that the ancestral heartbeat of this modern urban community could be traced back to the swinging rhythms of jazz. Joren soon found out about Lindy Hop. With each spin, twist, jump, and stomp to beats, whether from jazz, soul, funk, or Hip Hop music, Joren felt compelled to spread his love for these worlds through a festivity.

The more ‘anciennes’ of the Ghentian swing dance community should remember this event: 'The Boogey Bounce'.

THE BOOGEY BOUNCE

The first party Joren and his friends organized originated around 2014. Six more editions occured after that.

Lots of improvisational battles or circle jams started to occur during those parties. No restrictions, just free expression.

The Boogey Bounce was more than just a very nice party; it invited both worlds, old-school jazz and Hip Hop, to come together.

MEET, GREET & RECONNECT

Here at GHX 2024, we wanted to relive that piece of not-so-old history of Ghentian communities connecting through music and dance. For this Joren gathered and invited some friends from the hip hop communities to join us at our Exchange. To dance and party together so we can meet, greet and reconnect.
